Difficulty: easy to moderate
From Villa Nosal: approx. 1.5 km to Kuźnice – about 20 minutes on foot
If you dream of a mountain trip with beautiful views, but without climbing a high peak, Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy (Black Lake of Gąsienicowa Valley) will be an excellent choice. It is one of the most famous lakes in the Polish Tatra Mountains, enchanting visitors in every season.
From our villa, you can comfortably walk to Kuźnice in about 20 minutes, and from there begin one of the most beautiful routes leading through Hala Gąsienicowa. We recommend this hike both to people visiting the Tatras for the first time and to those who already know the local trails well.
Why is Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy worth visiting?
Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy is located at an altitude of 1624 m above sea level, in the heart of the Gąsienicowa Valley. Its dark surface is surrounded by granite peaks, making it one of the most photogenic places in the entire Tatra Mountains.
- beautiful mountain landscapes all year round,
- a relatively easy route from Kuźnice,
- views of Kościelec, Świnica and Orla Perć,
Although the lake is located in the high Tatras, reaching it is not extremely demanding. Most of the route follows a comfortable trail through Hala Gąsienicowa, which is why it is one of the most popular hiking destinations near Zakopane.
How to get to Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy?
The most convenient way to start the hike is from Kuźnice. Two popular trails lead to Hala Gąsienicowa – the blue trail through Boczań and the yellow trail through Jaworzynka Valley. Both routes meet near the Murowaniec mountain hut.

The total hiking time from Kuźnice is approximately 3 hours, while walking from our villa takes around 3.5 hours.
Along the way, it is worth stopping at the Murowaniec mountain hut. It is a perfect place for a short break before the final section leading to the lake.

Would you like to go further?
Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy is also a great starting point for further mountain adventures. For more experienced hikers, it can be only the beginning of a longer mountain journey. From here, you can continue towards Zawrat, Kozi Wierch, Świnica or Kościelec.
-
Kościelec (2155 m above sea level) – a black trail leading directly from Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy. However, this is not an easy route. The trail is steep, exposed in some sections, and intended for people with experience in mountain hiking. The ascent takes approximately 2 hours.
-
Karb (1853 m above sea level) – a green trail leads there from Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy. If your main goal is beautiful views and memorable photos, Karb is a great alternative to Kościelec. The climb is much easier and less demanding, and from the pass you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Tatras – with views of Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy, Kościelec and the surrounding peaks.
The ascent from Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy takes approximately 40–50 minutes.

How to get to Kuźnice?
It is very simple. From Villa Nosal you can reach Kuźnice on foot in approximately 20–25 minutes. During the high season, this is often the best solution, as private cars are not allowed to drive directly to Kuźnice.
If you do not feel like walking, there are bus stops near our property, where you can take city buses and minibuses heading towards Kuźnice.
What awaits you there?
The greatest impression is, of course, made by Czarny Staw itself. On windless days, the surface of the lake reflects the surrounding peaks, creating one of the most characteristic views in the Tatra Mountains.
